Giallo literature / film essay

A useful essay on giallo literature and film:

Is it just me or does the film section read like a cut and paste from Gary Needham's Kinoeye piece?

thank you for the link. there is also a new-ish book (European Film Noir by Andrew Spicer) with an interesting article on italian film noir, predominantly dealing with the giallo / giallo politico.

I've got the book - I posted a piece about it and Mary Wood's giallo / noir essay a few weeks back.

I'd also recommend her book Italian Cinema, which is refreshing in the kind of perspective it takes on Italian cinema as a whole, in looking a bit more at the industrial context of the films and in taking popular cinema seriously. She talks about, for instance, how the keeping of box office statistics for 12 different zones in Italy encouraged filone productions because backers could get a better idea of how a film might do, and situates Argento as a filmmaker existing between popular and art cinemas in some ways.

thank you, didn't know about this book... i ordered it right away. in stephen thrower's book on lucio fulci, there is a rather long part on the giallo genre - but i suppose you know that one, too! (should check the archives...)

Matt Blake and Julian Granger have a new book on obscure and low budget films coming out titled THE WILD EYE which will feature Elio Petri,Gianni Crea(Non sparate sui Bambini),the White Fang films,Alain Delon and more. This looks set to be a very interesting read esp.coming from 2 experts on obscure Italian/Euro cult cinema.

Thanks for the link Stephen.

I'd heartily recommend Matt's Eurospy Guide to anyone who doesn't know about / have it. I just wish more of the films were available.

Also which books on Italian genre cinema are considered "must read"?

Thanks!
